Rethinking Schrödinger’s Cat: Beyond the Solid Ontology Toward a Field–Fringe Interpretation of Existence

1. Introduction

The thought experiment of Schrödinger’s cat has long symbolized the paradox at the heart of quantum mechanics: the superposition of states and the role of observation. Traditional discussions, however, rely on a solid ontology, in which the cat is assumed to be either alive or dead as discrete, binary states. This assumption overlooks the fundamentally non-solid, fluid, and interference-based character of quantum reality.

2. Limits of the Solid Ontology

The conventional view presupposes that entities “exist out there” as objects. Several issues arise from this:

Perceptual Constraint Humans detect only a narrow band of reality (e.g., visible light). Ultraviolet or infrared radiation “existed” before technological detection, yet was regarded as “non-existent.” Thus, existence equated with observability is an inherently relative stance. Misunderstanding of Decoherence Decoherence is often described as the process by which the quantum becomes classical. Yet in a broader sense, the limits of human perception, bodily difference, and cognitive history are themselves forms of decoherence. No two humans experience the world identically, nor do humans and animals. Illusion of Solidity The notion that “the table,” “the cat,” and “the observer” are separate, solid things is a perceptual artifact. Quantum theory suggests rather that they are patterns of interference within a field.

3. Existence as Field

Here, existence is reframed not as solid matter but as field patterns.

The “cat” is not a fixed solid, but an interference domain encompassing both life and death as potentialities. Observation functions as a geometric ascendance point, fixing one trajectory within a wider field. Thus, the dichotomy “alive vs. dead” is not ontological but rather the projected outcome of perception.

4. The Fringe Hypothesis

Every localized non-Euclidean existence-space can be seen as surrounded by a fringe, an excess or “decorative edge.”

This fringe is a zone where distinct existence-spaces may touch—“as sleeves brushing in passing.” Through meditative states or heightened awareness, these fringes resonate, revealing interconnection. Animal sensory modalities (e.g., bat echolocation, pigeon magnetoreception) represent alternative non-Euclidean spaces, their fringes occasionally overlapping with ours. The Buddhist account of animals gathering at Śākyamuni’s passing may be reinterpreted as a fringe resonance leading to integrality.

5. Integral and Amplify

Integral: the synthesis of multiple existence-spaces, producing an optimal trajectory (the “best future”). Amplify: when consciousness fully synchronizes with the body, resonance is triggered and influence upon the field becomes possible.

In this framework, Schrödinger’s cat is not “split by observation,” but rather:

Integral gathers the superposed potentials, and Amplify resonates them into a stabilized point.

6. A New Interpretation

Reconstructing the paradox:

The cat = an interference field Life and death = distinct fringes of that field Observation = the consciousness-based amplify of the interference

Thus, Schrödinger’s cat no longer represents “the duality of existence,” but rather the non-solid, field-based nature of being.

7. Conclusion

The paradox of Schrödinger’s cat arises only if existence is conceived in solid, binary terms. By reinterpreting existence as field, fringe, and non-Euclidean interference, the cat is seen from the outset as a domain embodying both life and death simultaneously.

This approach not only bridges quantum mechanics and consciousness studies but also lays the foundation for understanding future optimization (Integral) and resonant action (Amplify).
